Sunstar GUIDOR® award – 2nd edition 17/10/2017

Sunstar GUIDOR® is proud and honored to announce the opening for the 2nd IADR KARRING-NYMAN SUNSTAR GUIDOR AWARD, a prestigious award that has been developed with the IADR and is sponsored by the Sunstar Foundation.

The 1st award was won last year by Dr Daniel Clark, DDS, PhD, a postdoctoral scholar at the UCSF (University of California, San Francisco) School of Dentistry, for his work on a preclinical in vivo study to test the hypothesis that age-related changes to macrophages negatively affect bone regeneration, and bone regeneration can be improved by limiting the activity of pro-inflammatory macrophages and promoting the activity of anti-inflammatory macrophages.

The prestigious award is sponsored by the Sunstar Foundation and awarded by the Periodontal Research Group (PRG) of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) and aims to support research within the field of oral tissue regeneration.

The award is named for Professor Thorkild Karring, a longtime member of the Department of Periodontology of the Royal Dental College in Aarhus (now the department of dentistry at Aarhus University) in Denmark, who symbolically received the inaugural award when it was created last year, and for Professor Sture Nyman, a former professor at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden and a frequent collaborator with Professor Karring in the field of oral tissue regeneration research. It pays tribute to the fathers of periodontal regeneration whose research is at the base of dental membranes, among which GUIDOR bioresorbable matrix barrier in particular, the first alloplastic bioresorbable regenerative matrix barrier specifically designed on the concept of Guided Tissue Regeneration as defined by both professors.

The Karring–Nyman Sunstar GUIDOR Award will be conferred annually to the winner of a
competition in which oral tissue regeneration research proposals are submitted to and evaluated by a judging panel of 5 members of the PRG. The grant of 10,000 Euro is to allow the winner, a doctoral student or post-doctoral scientist, to pursue research within the field of oral tissue regeneration with a project involving collaborative research on basic, pre-clinical in vivo, or clinical research with a clear translational or clinical component. Occasionally, a priority topic will be announced and only projects related to this will be eligible for evaluation for that year’s award.

The deadline for submission of the abstract is 31st december 2017.
